Profile - The Divorce Coach - Kirsten Gronning

I'm Kirsten Gronning, founder of The Divorce Coach. I was drawn to divorce coaching whilst steering my own litigious divorce through the courts - not an approach I would normally champion, but a last resort given a wholly un-cooperative spouse. As my marriage collapsed I managed my own divorce out of financial necessity, I was approached by others contemplating separation and divorce, but who didn’t feel they knew how to go about it. Just as people plan for a wedding, so others must plan for separation and divorce.

In my early thirties I had put a career in publishing on hold to have three children, and I returned to work full-time in various managerial roles in different industries when they were older. As my marriage collapsed, I took the decision to work part-time whilst I first tried to save my marriage, and, when this was impossible, to get through my divorce.

By building good relationships with family lawyers and other divorce professionals and organisations I was able to manage my own litigious divorce, and, crucially, sought and found excellent legal advice at particularly tricky times despite being on a budget. I learnt much along the way - not only about family law and the court process -  but also strategies to enable me to cope with the emotional upheaval. These were essential for making progress as I discovered there's precious little help available in a litigious divorce outside of legal help - and the services that do exist normally require an open cheque book.

Furthermore, I discovered it is possible to divorce without spending a large amount of money. The best way to go about it is to prioritise, agree (as far as possible with your partner) and develop in consultation with me an action plan which aims at reaching the best achievable solution, whilst putting the children's interests first. And then do it, without bitterness or regret but taking responsibility for your own part. But that's easier said than done when the emotional upheaval of an unhappy marriage kicks common sense and goodwill out of the door.

As The Divorce Coach, I encourage clients to avoid high conflict divorce and putting the interests of the children foremost, we aim for a dignified and best possible outcome. It isn't easy and there are no magic wands. And some people will have to fall back on the courts to make decisions for them.

I walk my talk, having myself found a new way of life after surviving a very litigious divorce and using it as the springboard for my divorce coaching business. I know others can achieve much too, given the tools support to do so. Last year I was privileged to be invited by Debenhams to discuss the importance of looking after yourself during and after divorce and appear in Debenhams 'Separated and Successful Club' with Trisha Goddard, Bel Mooney and Colleen Nolan. This year I have spoken on ITV's London Talking and the Richard and Judy show about marriage, divorce and experiences in court.

By passing on the benefit of the expertise I've gained, and by working towards coaching accreditation with Noble Manhattan, one of the finest coach training organisations in the UK to further enhance my skills, I offer the divorce support service I couldn't find myself. Divorce coaching is an approach tailored to suit the client, their budget and time restraints which gives them real strategies and tools to progress the divorce process. Men or women, they are encouraged with my help to take control of their lives as they emerge as single people from their marriage.

NB. I am more than happy to share the learnings with others of my very steep learning curve - both on the divorce front and as a coach in a brand new niche. And if others are able to pass on the word that divorce coaching is an inexpensive way to find the support, the focus, the motivation and the confidence to achieve a best possible divorce - I am very grateful to you.
